After some time of early experience Web Services are moving themselves from a new highly fragmented technology to a piece of nowadays infrastructures which promise to address various current challenges. These include especially classical issues of integration and data in a heterogeneous environment. The Web Service technology provides an open and technology-agnostic interface, and furthermore propels new usage paradigms in distributed computing infrastructures like Grid Services. Successful adoption of Web Service technology relies on the de?nition of interoperable architectural building blocks which can be integrated in existing softwarearchitectures,likeJ2EEorCORBAheritage. Interoperabilitywillsurely proveitselfasthecriticalsuccessfactoroftheWebServiceproliferation. Inorder to accomplish these interoperability various standardization bodies such as the W3C, UN or OASIS founded activities to create speci?cations and products implementing these building blocks. As the sister event of the First International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2003), which was held in Las Vegas, June 23 - 26, USA, has proven to be an excellent catalyst for research and collaboration, the 2003 International C- ference on Web Services - Europe (ICWS-Europe 2003) is expected to continue this trend. The topics of papers collected in this proceedings volume ranges from issues like modeling, development, deployment, publishing, as well as discovery, composition and collaboration, plus monitoring and analytical control. Addit- nal contributions summarize some research and development challenges of bu- ding Web Service solutions. Especially, some contributions present an emerging research direction, namely, Web Services collaboration. Moreover, some major research activities associated with facilitating extended business collaboration using Web services and semantic annotation are also covered.

Mario Jeckle, der 2004 bei einem Autounfall tödlich verunglückte, hatte eine Professur an der Fachhochschule Furtwangen inne und leitete dort den Masterstudiengang "Anwendungsarchitekturen". Zusätzlich vertrat er die DaimlerChrysler Forschung im World Wide Web Konsortium (W3C) und der Object Management Group (OMG). Vor seiner Hochschultätigkeit hatte er am DaimlerChrylser Forschungszentrum Ulm eine Arbeitsgruppe mit Schwerpunkt XML und Web Services geleitet.

Dr. Liang-Jie Zhang is a Research Staff Member (RSM) in Services Technologies at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. His research focus is SOA and Web Services for Industry Solutions. He is also co-leading an IBM-wide SOA Solution Stack project by working with his colleagues from IBM Global Services Team, Software Group, Sales & Distribution, and Research Division. Currently, he is the founding chair of the Services Computing PIC (Professional Interest Community) at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center to lead professional activities for Services Computing discipline.

In 2004 and 2005, Dr. Zhang was appointed as the Chief Architect of Industrial Standards at IBM Software Group. In this position, he was playing leadership role in helping define IBM s strategy for industrial standards and open architecture for service-oriented business solutions. He was also invited by the Chief Technology Officer and VP of IBM Global Industrial Sector to define the technical strategy for the Global Industrial Sector at IBM Sales and Distribution (S&D).

Dr. Zhang is one of the leading pioneers in the field of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services. Dr. Zhang was the lead inventor and architect of Business Explorer for Web Services, WSIL Explorer (part of IBM Emerging Technologies Toolkit), and Web Services Outsourcing Manager (WSOM), all released by IBM alphaWorks. He led a team from IBM Research and Software Group to create the first comprehensive Web services-based Managed E-Hub to enable services provisioning and business on-boarding for supporting business process on demand.
