Der Band setzt sich mit der Verstrickung von Freiheit, Sklaverei und Arbeit auseinander. Die Beiträge beleuchten dieses Verhältnis, indem sie gewalt- und zwangsbasierte Arbeitsverhältnisse soziohistorisch untersuchen. Die Analysen sind auf europäische und außereuropäische, koloniale und postkoloniale Kontexte bezogen. Informiert durch die globale Arbeitsgeschichte, knüpft der Band in systematischer Hinsicht an Orlando Pattersons Soziologie der Sklaverei und des europäischen Freiheitsideals an. Das Buch ist ein Plädoyer dafür, sich soziologisch mit Zwangsarbeit zu beschäftigen.

Résumé

This volume investigates the intertwining of freedom, slavery and work. The contributions shed light on this relationship by examining labour relations socio-historically based on violence and coercion. The chapters provide explorations of European and non-European, colonial and postcolonial contexts. Informed by global labour history, the volume draws systematically on Orlando Patterson's sociology of slavery and the European ideal of freedom. The book is a plea for a sociological approach to forced labour.
