Although the financial futures and options markets have only existed since 1972, many current participants have little understanding of their genesis. TODD E. PETZEL is Vice President of Resarch at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He formerly served as the Chief Economist of the Coffee, Sugar, and Cocoa Exchange in New York. Petzel was on the faculty of Stanford University from 1978 to 1982 and taught at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 1976 to 1978.
