Wie der Untertitel aussagt, wird der Leser, ähnlich Bd. 9 und dem noch unvollendeten "Mittelhochdeutsch", anhand der wichtigsten Texte der Periode in die Grammatik der althochdeutschen Dialekte (Orthographie, Lautlehre, Formenlehre, Syntax, Wortbildung: von 750 bis 1050) und in die germanische Vorgeschichte von Phonemsystem, Nominal- und Verbalflexion eingeführt.
