A propos de l'auteur
Helena Harastova is a writer, translator, and mother. She graduated in Dramaturgy from the Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts, having previously worked for the National Theatre in Brno, Czech Republic. Her most unusual pastime is proofreading texts for errors in spelling, grammar, and style.
Pavla Hanackova (1990–2021) was a Czech author who studied English and Chinese at Palacky University, Olomouc, and later worked as a children's book editor for Albatros. In addition to her love of travel, she had a deep passion for food – and all things food-related. She hailed from a picturesque Moravian village surrounded by vineyards.
Michaela Bergmannova is an illustrator from Czechia. A graduate of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, she worked with Czech Television on several children’s shows. She has also illustrated several children’s books and she also works for a children’s magazine. What she loves most about how the children perceive the world is the delight that kids take in new discoveries and their straightforwardness to new topics.

Texte suppl.
HOW KIDS CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD is an engaging picture book read about various holidays around the world. The book takes children on a guide through various celebrations from the vantage point of fictional children in each country. For instance, in Japan, Saki takes the reader on a journey through the celebration of Girls' Day, a day when families pray for little girls' health and happiness. In Russia, we learn how Tanya celebrates Easter, with traditional foods and activities. In Singapore, we join Nima who is celebrating the Buddhist holiday of Vesak. Each page spread includes an image of the celebration, surrounded by numbered boxes that call out specific celebrations shown, including foods, activities, and other key events of the holidays.
What I loved: This is a really fun look at different holidays around the world. The inclusion of a character that guides the journey through each holiday is a nice touch to bring a personal note to each page and add a bit of a storyline along the way. The breadth of countries and holidays (15) is also great with just enough detail to get the highlights of the events.
What left me wanting more: The organization of the book is not entirely clear as it hops back and forth between religions around the globe. It's not quite easy to find a holiday you might be looking for and is really a book that is designed to be used to explore more generally, rather than a resource to understand specific holiday celebrations.
Final verdict: A fun exploration of holidays across the globe, HOW KIDS CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD is an intriguing picture book that explains how 15 different holidays are celebrated in their related countries.

"This was a wonderful celebration of a diverse cultures and holidays across the globe. In this book we get to visit 15 different areas and learn about the holidays that are celebrated in these places. Many of these celebrations I have never heard of until reading this book [...] Readers will also learn about the different foods or activities associated with the holiday. This book is extremely diverse in the illustrations and truly celebrates the global diversity of holidays and people who celebrate them. The illustrations are fun, and they incorporate many of the colors and illustrations that are culturally relevant based on the holiday." Youth Services Book Review
