Der Schweizer Fotograf René Burri (1933-2014) war dort, wo Geschichte stattfand. Seit 1955 Mitglied von Magnum Photos, fotografierte er in Südostasien und im Mittleren Osten und dokumentierte den Vietnamkrieg in den 1960er-Jahren, den Sechstagekrieg (1967) und den Jom-Kippur-Krieg (1973). Reisen führten ihn nach Japan und China, durch Europa, Nord- und Südamerika. Sein aussergewöhnliches Gespür für Menschen, deren Persönlichkeiten und Lebensumstände ermöglichten es ihm, Berühmtheiten ebenso wie gewöhnliche Leute zu porträtieren.
Das Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne beherbergt die Fondation René Burri, die 2013 zur Bewahrung und Erschliessung seines Archivs gegründet wurde. Anlässlich einer Ausstellung im Frühjahr 2020 erscheint das englischsprachige Buch, das aus dieser einzigartigen Quelle schöpft. Zum ersten Mal überhaupt führt es Burris bekanntes fotografisches Werk zusammen mit bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten, Ausstellungsprojekten, Reisetagebüchern, Zeichnungen und Aquarellen, Buchentwürfen sowie anekdotischen Erinnerungen seiner Wegbegleiter.
Ausgezeichnet im Wettbewerb des Deutschen Fotobuchpreis 20/21 mit der Shortlist (Silber) in der Kategorie Konzeptionell-künstlerischer Fotobildband.
