À l'été 1919, Freud publie cet essai sur la genèse du masochisme, où il emmène son lecteur aux origines d'un fantasme étrange, dans un monde incestueux où le père est certain, où la mère n'a pas sa place, et où les enfants ne veulent partager aucun amour parental. Le refoulement a-t-il un sexe ? Pourquoi les enfants battus sont-ils le plus souvent des garçons ? Et pourquoi cela excite-t-il les filles ? « Un enfant est battu » fait le pont entre les perversions étudiées dans les Trois essais sur la théorie sexuelle et la pulsion de mort théorisée en 1920 dans Au-delà du principe de plaisir. Lacan ne s'y trompera pas, qui en louera l'audace pionnière et la puissance.
