Rien ne prédisposait Isabella L. Bird (1831-1904) à voyager. Cette fille de pasteur anglais était de santé fragile et traînait sa neurasthénie de fauteuil en sofa, jusqu'à ce qu'un médecin perspicace lui prescrive le voyage pour remède. Ce fut une révélation : elle découvrit en solitaire l'Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande, les États-Unis, le Maroc, le Tibet, la Chine, la Corée et le Japon. Ses séjours en Asie lui valurent en 1892 d'être la première femme à entrer à la Royal Geographical Society de Londres. En 1873, Isabella décide d'explorer les Rocheuses, dans ce Colorado qui n'est pas encore un État. Curant plusieurs mois, elle va partager le quotidien rude des colons et parcourir à cheval des centaines de kilomètres en compagnie de desperados tels que Rocky Mountain Jim, le célèbre hors-la-loi et poète, dont elle tombe follement amoureuse.
