Excerpt from The University of Toronto Medical Journal, Vol. 12: An Undergraduate Publication; May, 1935

Department of Pathological Chemistry, University of Toronto.

Iodine was discovered by Courtois in the year 1812, who isolated it from kelp or burnt sea weed. It does not occur naturally as the free element but always combined, usually as the iodide or iodate of sodium or potassium and is widely though sparingly distributed. It occurs in sea water and therefore in most sea plants, and is present in the salt petre deposits of Chile as an impurity from which it can be isolated.
