T ornas O'Crohan (1856-1937), pêcheur et paysan des îles Blasket, écrivit L'Homme des îles en gaélique vers 1925. Témoignage précis et poignant de ce qu'était alors la vie des quelque cent soixante habitants de la « dernière paroisse avant l'Amérique », ce livre suscita dès sa parution une émotion comparable à celle qui salua en France Le Cheval d'orgueil de Pierre-Jakez Hélias. Dans sa simplicité même, O'Crohan est le porte-parole d'une culture que les misères de l'Histoire ont vainement tenté d'effacer. Avec lui, on chante, on boit, on se bagarre, on pêche le homard, on chasse le lapin et la baleine, on découvre les sortilèges d'une civilisation baignée d'embruns et de bière noire.
