The colonial turn in the recent historiography of the German Empire has been based upon the claim that the colonial encounter has profoundly shaped not only the colonial societies in Africa and Oceania, but equally the German society of the »
Kaiserreich«. This volume traces the colonial entanglements, performances, and spectacles in the rising industrial and harbour city of Mannheim in Southwest Germany. Systematically asking for specific localizations and institutionalizations of the encounter with the overseas colonies, the contributions in the volume underline the need to provincialize monolithic understandings of the imperial metropolis.

Katharina Niederau ist Studienreferendarin für die Fächer Geschichte und Sozialwissenschaften in Nordrhein-Westfalen.Jan Diebold lebt in Leipzig. 2017 wurde er an der Universität Heidelberg promoviert. Seine inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte sind die Geschichte von Kolonialismus, Rassismus und die Intersektionalitätsforschung.Professor Dr. Ulrich Nieß ist Leiter des MARCHIVUM, Mannheim.Dr. Bernhard Gißibl ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz.Katharina Niederau ist Studienreferendarin für die Fächer Geschichte und Sozialwissenschaften in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Jahrzehntelang erzählte man sich in der Rhein-Neckar-Region die Anekdoten und Eskapaden des Korpsstudenten und Kolonialeroberers Theodor Bumiller. Ausgehend von dessen imperialer Weltläufigkeit und auf Basis bislang unbekannter und unveröffentlichter Quellen untersucht der Sammelband systematisch die Verbindungen Mannheims zur kolonialen Welt. Mit seinem Interesse für ortsspezifische Inszenierungen und Lokalisierungen leistet er einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Provinzialisierung des Kolonialen in der imperialen Metropole. Die beigelegte DVD enthält Transkriptionen und Faksimiles von Expeditionstagebüchern Bumillers.
