Nous n'oublions rien : tout ce que nous avons perçu, pensé, voulu, persiste indéfiniment. Dès lors, où les souvenirs sont-ils stockés ? Peut-on les convoquer par le rêve ? Que « voit-on » quand on rêve ? A-t-on des sensations physiques ? Rêver demande-t-il des efforts ? Et peut-on avoir des idées, créer en rêvant ?
C'est à la matérialité du rêve que s'attache ici Bergson. Son texte est suivi d'un magnifique écrit de Robert Louis Stevenson, « Un chapitre sur les rêves », que Bergson commente et qui, plus tard, fascinera Jorge Luis Borges. Féru de psychologie, Stevenson y pressent, dès 1888, l'importance de ce que Freud appellera « inconscient ».
