Von Lüneburg ging Francke auf Speners Bat nach Hamburg, um dort die Unterweisung des gelehrten Haupt pastors Winkler zu geniessen. Sehr wichtig ward für ihn hier, dass er durch Schwierigkeiten, die sich in Bezug auf den Fortbezug seines Stipendiums erhoben, veranlasst ward durch Unterricht, den er kleinen Kindern erteilte, sich seinen Unterhalt zu erwerben und so praktischen Einblick in die Jugenderziehung zu gewinnen.
