Siamo alla fine dell'estate del 1834. Le fate non erano state ancora rappresentate e la seconda opera non ancora era finita, allorchè Wagner ottenne il posto di direttore musicale al teatro di Magdeburgo.
Le relazioni con i cantanti, la sua funzione di direttore d'orchestra, la gioia di poter liberamente far mostra delle giovanili attività, produssero in Wagner un gran cambiamento.
