À dix-neuf ans, Richard Henry Dana, alors étudiant à Harvard, décide de changer de vie. Il s'engage comme simple matelot sur un voilier de commerce à destination de la Californie pour un voyage de deux ans, en passant par le cap Horn. Deux années sur le gaillard d'avant développe certains des thèmes majeurs qui inspireront Herman Melville : le voyage initiatique, la lutte contre les éléments, l'ambiguïté de la vie primitive et sa trompeuse innocence. Souvent considéré comme le plus beau livre de mer, il a valu à son auteur, dès sa parution en 1840, une célébrité prodigieuse, égale à celle de Dickens, qui l'a installé
comme l'un des grands classiques de la littérature américaine du XIX^e siècle.
