Dans les années 1850, à l'époque de l'immense succès de La Case de l'oncle Tom, écrit par une Blanche, Hannah Crafts rédige dans l'intimité de sa chambre son autobiographie romancée. Cette oeuvre, d'une importance historique considérable, ne sera publiée qu'un siècle et demi plus tard. Elle s'avère être le premier roman écrit aux États-Unis par une esclave ayant réussi à s'échapper, et le premier livre écrit par une Noire, avant même la guerre de Sécession. Par conséquent, avec Autobiographie d'une esclave, c'est aussi la première fois que l'on saisit directement la conscience, les pensées et les émotions d'une esclave réfléchissant sur l'univers de l'esclavage.
