Questo volume raccoglie tutte le opere di Marina Cvetaeva legate a Rainer Maria Rilke, il poeta prediletto su tutti, che Marina non potè mai incontrare ma che entrò nella sua vita con la potenza di un turbine. Oltre infatti al rapporto epistolare fra i due - e anzi fra i tre, perché è a un altro grande poeta, Boris Pasternak, che si deve la loro amicizia - quell'incontro letterario fece sì che Rilke dedicasse alla Cvetaeva la grande elegia dell'8 giugno 1926, e che Marina, ben oltre la scomparsa del grande poeta praghese avvenuta il 29 dicembre 1926 nel sanatorio svizzero di Val Mont, continuasse a rivolgersi a lui in una serie di opere che sono fra le più intense e importanti nella sua produzione, sia in versi che in prosa. Non opere 'dedicate' a Rilke, ma, come scrive la stessa Cvetaeva, veri e propri "colloqui con Rilke", e ancora di più: "la presonanza e la risonanza - in me della sua morte". Così, da questo punto di vista, i grandi poemi "Tentativo di stanza", "Lettera per l'anno nuovo" e "Poema dell'aria", si illuminano di una luce ulteriore e forse più netta; e con le meno note ma bellissime prose di La tua morte e di "Alcune lettere di Rainer Maria Rilke" vanno a costituire un originale insieme di straordinaria forza espressiva.

Philip Taubman worked for The New York Times for thirty years as a reporter and editor, including stints as chief of both the Washington and Moscow bureaus. He has also worked at Esquire and Time magazines. He was twice awarded the George Polk Award-for National Reporting in 1981 and for Foreign Affairs Reporting in 1983. Since retiring from the Times in 2008, he has been a consulting professor at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
