Dr. Peter Claus Hartmann, geboren 1940, war von 1982 - 1988 Professor für Neuere Geschichte und Bayerische Landesgeschichte an der Universität Passau. Seit 1988 ist er Professor für Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Mainz. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen.
