This book assesses the extent to which ideas and structures of the Swiss vocational and professional education and training (VPET) system couldalso be applied to vocational qualifications in other countries. It offers a look at the different forms of VPET in Switzerland and introduces the development and structure of the system as well as its governance and legal foundation. Besides providing insight into the functions of vocational training and the education and training pathways, the book also presents current challenges of the VPET system along with possible future development steps.

Emil Wettstein, geboren 1942 in Chur, zwei erwachsene Töchter, dipl. Ing. ETH und Dr. sc. techn. Tätig als Oberstufenlehrer in den Bündner Bergen, Gründer und Leiter der Technikerschule ABB, später der Abteilung Berufspädagogik des Amtes für Berufsbildung Zürich, des Höheren Lehramtes für Berufsschullehrer an der Universität Zürich und der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für angewandte Berufsbildungsforschung. Publizistische Tätigkeit und Lehraufträge, u. a. an verschiedenen Hochschulen. Seit 1997 selbstständig als Redaktor, Publizist und Leiter von Projekten mit Schwerpunkt bei den Strukturen der Sekundarstufe II und der höheren Berufsbildung.
Jahrgang 1955, Studium der Pädagogik, Ethnologie, Jus und Journalistik an den Universitäten Fribourg, Berlin und Zürich. 1982-86: Teilzeit- Unterricht Allgemeinbildung an einer Berufschule in Zürich. Doktorat zu Georg Kerschensteiners' Arbeitsschule (1992) und Habilitation zum Internationalen Argument von Bildungsreformen in England und in der Schweiz (1997) an der Universität Bern. 1998-2004: C-4-Professor für berufliche, betriebliche Weiterbildung an der Universität Trier. Seit 2004 ordentlicher Professor für Berufsbildung an der Universität Zürich. Forschungsinteressen: International vergleichende Bildungsforschung, Berufsbildung und Weiterbildung, Qualität und Evaluation in der Berufsbildung, Philosophy and History of Education.
