Excerpt from The Man for the Hour: A Sermon, Preached in the Church of the Covenanters, in the City of Cincinnati, on the Evening of January Twenty-Second, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Three
Your respectful request for a copy of the Sermon preached by me, on the evening of the 22d inst. On the subject of the President's Proclama tion of Emancipation, for publication, is before me, and my reply is, that as soon as convenient, I shall write it out from my brief notes, and give it, through the press, to the public. This I prefer to its repetition, as has been requested, at Pike's Opera House. The subject, with its antecedents, concomitants and consequents, is of no ordinary importance. And as the text from which the discourse was preached, is, show thyself A man, which the dying David gave in charge to Solomon, his son and successor, so its title shall be, the man for the hour.
