Je pense en vérité que la pratique philosophique que l'on enseigne dans ce petit livre si cher et si précieux est bien la plus appropriée à l'homme et en particulier aux esprits de nature ou de complexion ni héroïques, ni très forts, mais modérés et dotés d'une force moyenne, ou bien encore faibles, et par là même profitable aux hommes modernes plus encore qu'aux anciens.

Comme Socrate et Jésus (ce rapprochement ne peut que le grandir), Epictète n'a pas écrit. C'est un de ses disciples. Flavius Arrien, qui nous a transmis, vraisemblablement sans trop les remanier, les notes qu'il prenait en assistant à ses cours ou au sortir d'une conversation privée. De là le naturel, la fraîcheur, la familiarité des propos, la spontanéité de l'expression, ce qu'on a appelé <> d'Epictète.
Ce n'est pas en vain qu'on lui a donné le nom de Manuel qui en grec est synonyme de poignard. S'il est si mince et de peu de poids c'est pour qu'on puisse le glisser dans sa ceinture et le consulter à toute heure de jour ou de nuit. On y puisera la force d'affronter toutes les tyrannies qui forgent dans l'ombre leurs armes.
