À l'été 1716, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, âgée de vingt-sept ans, quitte l'Angleterre pour suivre jusqu'à Constantinople son époux investi d'une mission de négociateur entre l'Autriche et la Turquie. Piquante observatrice des moeurs ottomanes, l'épistolière fait le surprenant éloge du harem et du voile comme gages de bonheur et de liberté pour les femmes. Mais la présente sélection s'attache en outre aux étapes de la voyageuse à travers l'Europe pour rapporter sa découverte de la cour de Vienne et du Paris de la Régence grouillant de créatures ridicules.
Une traduction de 1795 restitue à cette correspondance toute sa saveur, car Lady Montagu est bien à sa façon une marquise de Sévigné ou une Madame Palatine made in England.
