Michel Jan remonte à 1971. Déjà grand arpenteur
de l'Asie centrale et orientale, il se heurte,
lors d'un bref séjour aux confins soviétiques de la
Chine, à un double mystère : celui d'un homme,
Vladimir Klepikov, et celui de la cité dont celui-ci
finit par lui confier qu'il est originaire, Harbin, la
ville chinoise la plus septentrionale, fondée en
1898 par les sujets du tsar pour construire le
chemin de fer reliant Moscou à Vladivostok.
C'est avec émotion et pudeur que Michel Jan
retrace ce destin, somme toute ordinaire, d'un
Russe du XXe siècle. Mais il profite de ce devoir
d'amitié pour reconstituer le tableau, jusqu'à
aujourd'hui largement ignoré, d'une orageuse
coexistence frontalière de deux empires.»
