Une Anglaise au Far West : voyage d'une femme aux montagnes rocheuses

Rien ne prédisposait Isabella L. Bird (1831-1904) à voyager. Cette fille de pasteur anglais était de santé fragile et traînait sa neurasthénie de fauteuil en sofa, jusqu'à ce qu'un médecin perspicace lui prescrive le voyage pour remède. Ce fut une révélation: elle découvrit en solitaire Australie, Nouvelle-Zélande, États-Unis, Maroc, Tibet, Chine, Corée et Japon. Ses séjours en Asie lui valurent en 1892 d'être la première femme à entrer à la Royal Geographical Society de Londres.

En 1873, elle s'en va explorer les Rocheuses dans son «costume hawaïen». Elle va demeurer quatre mois dans ce Colorado qui n'est pas encore un État, partageant le quotidien rude des colons et parcourant à cheval des centaines de kilomètres en compagnie de desperados tels que Mountain Jim, dont elle tombe follement amoureuse.
