Le Coran est un ensemble de textes dictés par l'ange Gabriel au prophète Mohamed entre 612 et 632 apr. J.-C. Pour le sauvegarder, les compagnons du prophète en apprennent les versets au fur et à mesure de leur révélation. Sous le calife Othmân (644-656), on décide d'une vulgate (moushaf) composée de 114 chapitres et de 6.219 versets.
