Jason Sangik Noh - Biography of Cancer

Jason Sangik Noh ist Chirurg und auf Krebserkrankungen spezialisiert. Parallel zu seiner medizinischen Laufbahn hat er sich intensiv mit Fotografie beschäftigt. Sein Buch lässt sich keiner bestimmten Kategorie zuordnen: Es ist eine Art Bild-Notizbuch mit Skizzen, Fotos und handschriftlich verfassten Anmerkungen. Auf diese Weise verschmelzen wissenschaftlicher Anspruch und menschliche Anteilnahme zu einem beeindruckenden und berührenden Dokument. Als eine der am kompliziertesten zu behandelnden Erkrankungen der modernen Zivilisation forderte die Krankheit den Autor zu dieser "Biografie des Krebses" heraus. Es ist ihm gelungen, sich ohne Pathos mit dem Thema auseinanderzusetzen und es auf diversen Ebenen zu beleuchten. Für Erfolg und Genesung, aber auch Niederlage und Verzweiflung findet er sein eigenes bildnerisches Vokabular. Dieses Projekt erregte große Aufmerksamkeit und gewann den diesjährigen Preis der Ilwoo Foundation in Korea.

Jason Sangik Noh is a surgeon and specializes in cancer treatment. Parallel to his medical career, he has dealt intensely with photography. His book cannot be assigned to a specific category: it is a kind of picture notebook with sketches, photographs, and handwritten remarks. His scientific aspirations and human interest merge to come an impressive and touching document. As one of the diseases of modern civilization that is the most complex to treat, it challenged the author to create this Biography of Cancer. He has succeeded in examining the theme without pathos and analyzing in depth its many levels. He finds his own pictorial vocabulary for success and recovery, as well as for failure and desperation. This project gained a great deal of attention and was awarded this year’s award by the Ilwoo Foundation in Korea.
