Excerpt from Will Shakespeare's Little Lad
There was an air of alertness about the little town of Stratford-on-Avon that May morning in the year of grace 1596, and the thirty-eighth of the reign of good Queen Bess, though usually at such an early hour it was taking its last delicious doze, utterly unmindful of the world and its manifold duties.
But who could really sleep the first of May, even if the sun had not yet risen? Not the old people, surely, whose slumbers are light enough at any time and who, with all the mysterious noises of the previous night sounding in their ears, lived over again in a half-drowsy state the days when they, too, went a-Maying.
