We began the papers by suggesting some considerations meant to commend what we were to write about to public attention. These considerations we have not reprinted we felt that it was super¿uous to do so. The acceptance which the papers met with as they appeared from week to week; the desire expressed to have them in a permanent form; and the very large number of Subscribers for this volume, to whom we offer cordial thanks.
