Die von Matthew Barney gestaltete Publikation «Drawing Restraint Volume VI» erzählt in chronologischer Bildabfolge den dramatischen Inhalt des Filmes «Drawing Restraint 17», der gemeinsam mit dem Künstler vom Schaulager produziert worden ist. Entstanden ist der Film im Rahmen der Ausstellung «Matthew Barney. Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail», die 2010 im Schaulager Basel stattgefunden hat.
Erzählt wird eine an das Gemälde «Der Tod und die Frau» des Renaissancekünstlers Hans Baldung, gen. Grien, angelehnte zeitgenössische Allegorie, in der sich eine junge Frau vom Goetheanum in Dornach zum Schaulager begibt und dort schliesslich den Tod findet. Der in der «Drawing Restraint»-Serie angelegte Widerstreit aus Hindernis und Überwindung liegt auch der Filmhandlung und deren künstlerischen Umsetzung zugrunde.
Die Bildfolge wird durch eingelegte Blätter aus handgeschöpftem Lama-Li-Papier choreografiert, das zum Teil einzeln von Hand mit Rissen versehen worden ist. Die natürliche Variation macht jeden Band zum Unikat.
Created by Matthew Barney, “Drawing Restraint Volume VI” is a chronological sequence of images narrating the dramatic contents of the film “Drawing Restraint 17”, a coproduction between the artist and Schaulager. The film was produced as part of the exhibition “Matthew Barney. Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail”, staged at Schaulager Basel in 2010. The story is a contemporary allegory inspired by the painting “Death and the Woman” by the Renaissance artist Hans Baldung (known as Grien), in which a young woman travels from the Goetheanum in Dornach to Schaulager, where she ultimately meets her death. The conflict between obstruction and conquest set out in the “Drawing Restraint” series also underlies the film’s plot and its artistic interpretation. The sequence of images is choreographed by sheets of handmade Lama Li paper inserted into the book, some of which have been individually hand-torn. This natural variation makes each book unique.
