Leendert Blok (1895-1986) experimentierte früh mit ersten Farbfotografien und formatfüllenden Nahaufnahmen. Schon in den 1920er-Jahren arbeitete er eng mit Blumengroßhändlern zusammen und produzierte für deren Warenkataloge hochwertige Farbdrucke. Blok nutzte das Autochromverfahren der Brüder Lumière und inszenierte dabei die einzelnen Blüten als kostbare Objekte der Begierde.
Blok wollte mit seinen Bildern faszinieren: In zartesten Farbschattierungen und Bronzetönen offenbart sich in ihnen das ewige Reich der Flora; Blüten und Knospen werden im Chiaroscuro überhöht. Vor dunklem Fond präsentiert er Blumen auf eine Weise, die an die Vanitas-Stillleben des Goldenen Zeitalters erinnert. Tulpen, Dahlien, Narzissen, Iris, Hyazinthen und Pfingstrosen zeigen sich in ihrer ganzen Pracht und Einzigartigkeit. Die Fotografien von Leendert Blok erinnern an alte botanische Illustrationen. Gilles Clément received Doctoral degrees in Neurobiology from the University of Lyon in 1981 and in Natural Science from the University of Paris in 1986. Dr. Clément is currently Professor of Space Life Sciences in International Space University (ISU), Strasbourg, France. Prior to this position, he was Director of Research from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Toulouse, France. Research in space life sciences has been his primary focus with experiments on Salyut-7 (1982), MIR (1988), and on more than 25 Space Shuttle flights (1985 present). His research topics include influence of microgravity on posture, eye movements, spatial orientation, and cognition in humans. To date, he gathered data on more than 100 astronauts, during and after space missions on the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. Dr. Clément has written more than 100 peer-viewed research papers in scientific journals.
Résumé
Leendert Blok (1895–1986) experimented with color photography and the use of the panoramic format. In the twenties, the Dutch photographer worked in close collaboration with flower producers, providing color prints and autochromes for the display catalogues of the various species they cultivated. Blok captured flowers like objects of desire, using the Autochrome Lumière technique.
For Blok, photography relates above all to the gaze. Muted tones and soft bronze hues reveal a timeless world of flora, in which corolla, petals, and buds are sublimated by chiaroscuro. The flowers stand out against a plain dark background, alluding to the famous vanitas of the Dutch Golden Age. Tulips, dahlias, daffodils, irises, hyacinths, and peonies reveal themselves in all their glorious diversity. The photographs of Leendert Blok are reminiscent of botanists’ slides of yore, immersing us in the immanence of plant life, in which each flower becomes sculpture.
