Einstein said that the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. But was he right? In The Nature of Space and Time, two of the worlds most famous physicists - Stephen Hawking (A Brief History of Time) and Roger Penrose (The Road to Reality) - debate these questions. The authors outline how their positions have further diverged on a number of key issues, including the spatial geometry of the universe, inflationary versus cyclic theories of the cosmos, and the black-hole information-loss paradox. Though much progress has been made, Hawking and Penrose stress that physicists still have further to go in their quest for a quantum theory of gravity.

Stephen Hawking, geboren 1942 in Oxford, Großbritannien ist Astrophysiker und seit 1979 Inhaber des Lucasischen Lehrstuhls für Mathematik und Theoretische Physik an der Universität Cambridge, den einst auch Sir Isaac Newton inne hatte. Er lieferte bedeutende Arbeiten zur Kosmologie, wobei seine Forschung vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Physik der Schwarzen Löcher angesiedelt ist. 1963 wurde bei Hawking Amyotrophe Lateralsklerose (ALS) diagnostiziert und er ist seit 1968 auf einen Rollstuhl angewiesen. Durch einen Luftröhrenschnitt 1985 verlor er die Fähigkeit zu sprechen und ist für die verbale Kommunikation auf die Benutzung eines Sprachcomputers angewiesen. Stephen Hawking veröffentlichte seit den 70er Jahren zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Werke und zählt zu den weltweit renommiertesten Wissenschaftlern, die auf dem Gebiet der Astrophysik forschen. Durch "Eine kurze Geschichte der Zeit" ist er auch einem breiten Publikum außerhalb der Fachwelt bekannt geworden.
