A propos de l'auteur

Chris Lintott is an astronomer at the University of Oxford, where he is also a research fellow at New College. He arrived in Oxford in 2006 via an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at Magdalene College, Cambridge and a PhD in astrochemistry at University College London. His own research interests lie in the formation and evolution of galaxies, with a sideline in discovering exoplanets, but most of his effort goes into developing the Zooniverse platform of citizen science projects. Through Zooniverse, more than 800,000 people have discovered planets, explored the Milky Way, transcribed ancient papyri and gone on virtual safari to the Serengeti. A passionate advocate of the public understanding of science, he is best known as co-presenter of the BBC's long-running Sky at Night, and as co-author with Patrick Moore and Brian May (of Queen fame) of 'Bang!' and 'The Cosmic Tourist'. When not staring hopelessly at his email inbox, he can be found cooking or screaming loudly in support of either the Chicago Fire or Torquay United., He blogs at:

Résumé

This is the story of what is happening in this, the era of big data, in which citizen scientists can discover new planets. Drawing on his experience setting up the extraordinarily successful Zooniverse platform, where ordinary internet users contribute significantly to scientific research, Chris Lintott describes the origins and ongoing state of crowdsourcing. In this inspiring, provocative argument, he shows how, collectively, we can beat the experts, digging deep into the science of human motivation to understand just what people think theyre doing when they sign up to decode papyri or watch lions.
Written just as crowdsourcing is poised to become a part of all of our lives, this is an impassioned reminder of what each of us can do when we put our minds to it, and a manifesto for what can happen if we learn the right lessons from the pioneering projects taking place right now.

Préface

An inspiring manifesto for power of the crowd and the ways in which crowdsourcing is changing scientific research, our world and ourselves.
