La sottie est sans doute la contribution la plus originale du théâtre français aux spectacles du Moyen Âge et du XVI^e siècle. C'est un théâtre de la folie qui se double d'un théâtre de la sagesse et de l'institution du morosophe si cher à Érasme et Rabelais. Ce premier volume traite des sotties lyonnaises et genevoises du XVI^e siècle, qui constituent un apport majeur à l'histoire locale, et désautomatisent le développement du théâtre tel qu'on l'entend de nos jours. Il s'agit d'un théâtre « engagé », voire crypté, qui cherche à frôler les limites de ce qui peut se dire dans l'espace public.
