C'est à l'occasion d'un mariage à New Delhi
que Zia Jaffrey, Américaine d'origine indienne,
fait la connaissance des hijras. Elle se lance alors
à la recherche de ces mystérieux personnages
dont le nom signifie «ni homme ni femme».

La plupart sont d'authentiques eunuques qui,
répartis dans toutes les grandes villes de l'Inde,
se comptent encore par centaines de milliers. Ils
occupent dans la société de castes une position
ambiguë qui les fait tout à la fois craindre et
mépriser : s'ils portent chance aux nouveau-nés
et aux jeunes mariés, on raconte aussi qu'ils
volent et se prostituent, voire qu'ils kidnappent
des adolescents afin de leur infliger la castration.

Zia Jaffrey devra mener une longue enquête pour
explorer autant de sujets tabous et s'introduire
auprès des hijras.
