L'Occident a baptisé «primitives» les sociétés africaines ou océaniques qu'il découvrait - autant de peuples soi-disant dotés d'une mentalité «mystique et prélogique» qui les situait à un stade antérieur, voire inférieur, de la grande histoire de l'humanité. Ces conceptions ont d'abord été battues en brèche par des artistes, et non par des scientifiques : Picasso, Braque, Malevitch, Klee, Kandinsky s'inspirent des arts «nègres», «primitifs», et ne font plus la différence entre peinture savante et peinture populaire.

Pour Jean-Pierre Barou, cette étrange convergence devient possible lorsque les peintres européens ne peignent plus ce qu'ils voient, mais ce qu'ils savent, de la même manière que les «primitifs». Pour eux tous, la peinture ne sert plus à représenter le visible, mais à s'approcher de la connaissance, à montrer l'être au-delà des apparences, à guérir parfois...
