Dieses Buch will das bekannte Geschichtswerk des Bremer Domscholasters Adam von Bremen theologisch würdigen. Dazu untersucht es die Darstellung der Bischöfe in den einzelnen Amtsviten der gesta hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum und wertet sie als Zeugnisse von Adams Vorstellungen vom Bischofsamt aus. In Inhalt und Anlage seines Bischofsbildes erweist sich der Bistumsgeschichtsschreiber als Repräsentant des Bremer Domklerus.
Geprägt durch die Tradition der Aachener Regel, frei von der polemische Kanonikerkritik der Kirchenreformer und gemeinschaftsbewusster als die brieflichen Erwartungen, die sein Zeitgenossen und Amtskollege Meinhard von Bamberg gegenüber Bischöfen formuliert hat, vermittelt Adam eine aus überlieferten Werten und Ressourcen gespeiste spezifische Auffassung von geistlicher Leitung.

This volume intends to pay theological tribute to the well known historical work of the cathedral scholar Adam of Bremen. For this reason the portrayal of bishops in the various official vitae of gesta hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum are examined and evaluated as testimonials of Adam's notion of the episcopate. Contents and concept of his view of the episcopal office characterise the historiographer of the diocese as a representative of the Bremen cathedral clergy.
Shaped by the tradition of the Aachen regulations, and free from the polemical criticism of canons by church reformers, and with more communal awareness than is shown in the epistolary expectations that his contemporary and colleague in office Meinhard of Bamberg formulated against bishops, Adam conveys a specific understanding of spiritual guidance that is based on traditional values and resources.
