Val McDermid, geb. 1955 in Kirkcaldy im schottischen Fife, wuchs dort in einer Bergarbeiterfamilie auf. Nach der Schulzeit begann sie, als erste aus ihrer Familie überhaupt, ein Studium: Englische Literatur am St. Hilda's College in Oxford. Nach Jahren als Literaturdozentin und als Journalistin bei namhaften Zeitungen lebt sie heute als freie Autorin in Manchester und in einem kleinen Dorf an der englischen Nordseeküste.
