Werner Schmidt (1953) ist einer der interessantesten zeitgenössischen Schweizer Architekten. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien gründet er ein eigenes Büro in Graubünden. Nach der Realisierung einiger inspirierender und unkonventioneller Projekte, gewinnt er in den 2000er-Jahren als Architekt internationalen Ruf dank einiger überzeugender Gebäude aus Strohballen in der Schweiz, in Deutschland und im Südtirol.

A propos de l'auteur
Andrea Bocco Guarnieri. MA, Ph.D. Associate Professor in Architectural Technology at Politecnico di Torino. He has performed research on Bernard Rudofsky (Bernard Rudofsky. A Humane Designer, Springer Verlag, 2003); ontology for terminological computational resources; analysis of technological design and building detail in contemporary architecture (Antonio Besso-Marcheis. An architectural mode, Abitare Segesta, 2005); Alpine architecture and material culture (Flessibile come di pietra. Tattiche di sopravvivenza e pratiche di costruzione nei villaggi montani, CELID, 2008, with Gianfranco Cavaglià); urban regeneration, participatory design and social housing. His current research fields are the sustainability of the traditional built environment, namely in Alpine regions; and appropriate technologies, stemming from a holistic approach to life. He has also been the founder and director of San Salvario Neighbourhood Development Agency.
Résumé
Werner Schmidt (1953) is one of the most interesting contemporary Swiss architects. After graduating from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, he established his practice in Graubünden. After building some inspiring and unconventional projects, in the 2000s he gained international reputation thanks to several convincing buildings made of straw bales in Switzerland, Germany and South Tyrol.
This fascinating book is the result of a profound, comprehensive and evidence based analysis. Selected projects are described, giving information from different perspectives, so as to present the most important aspects of Schmidt's work - creative process, impact on the environment, alternative building techniques with natural materials, tendency toward autonomy, and quality of life in the buildings.
