Die drei bedeutenden Künstler der Moderne, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Barnett Newman (1905-1970) und Dan Flavin (1933-1996), gehören zwar je einer anderen Generation an, haben sich aber in ihrem künstlerischen Schaffen alle auf wegweisende Art der abstrakten Kunst verpflichtet. Unter verschiedenen geistigen und gesellschaftlichen Vorzeichen vertrauten sie der Askese im Umgang mit bildnerischen Mitteln in vorher ungekannter Radikalität. Mit reiner Farbe, konkreter Form und neuen Materialien weiteten sie die Dimension der Kunst ins Universale. Die Publikation begleitet eine große Sonderausstellung im Kunstmuseum Basel und stellt die drei Künstler chronologisch in Einzelpräsentationen vor, sodass sich in der Abfolge erhellende Zusammenhänge auftun. Meisterwerke werden präsentiert und selten gezeigten Arbeiten gegenübergestellt.

A propos de l'auteur

Barnett Newman (1905 -1970), studied art and philosophy in New York. In 1948, he launched the school of painting Subjects of the Artist. Numerous solo and group exhibitions from 1950 onwards.

Résumé

Although the three prominent modernist artists Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), Barnett Newman (1905–1970), and Dan Flavin (1933–1996) each belong to a different generation, all of them have devoted their creativity to abstract art in groundbreaking ways. Under various intellectual and social auspices they relied upon ascetics in their unheard-of radical dealings with art. Using pure color, concrete form, and new materials, they expanded the dimensions of art into the universal. This volume appears in conjunction with a large, special exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel, and features each of the three artists in chronological order, so that the sequencing gives rise to enlightening nexuses.
