Une comédie étonnante, parce qu'elle est un curieux assemblage d'éléments divers. Ce fut d'abord un spectacle de cour : la danse, la musique de Lully contribuent aux divertissements royaux. Quant au bourgeois vaniteux, il suscite la moquerie, mais montre aussi la promotion d'une catégorie sociale, maîtresse de l'économie.
