Comment les Celtes considéraient-ils la femme ? L'auraient-ils rêvée ? N'est-ce pas l'image de la femme, plus que sa réalité, qu'ils nous ont léguée dans leurs traditions et leurs légendes ?
Ce livre s'efforce de répondre à ces questions. A travers les témoignages des Grecs et des Latins, à travers l'abondante littérature médiévale irlandaise, à travers la tradition bretonne et les fameux romans de la Table ronde, ainsi que les nombreux contes populaires de l'Europe occidentale, surgit la troublante silhouette d'une femme inconnue, la femme-soleil, sous les noms les plus divers : Dahud la «bonne sorcière», Rhiannon la «grande reine», Guenièvre le «blanc fantôme», Blodeuwedd la «née des fleurs», et beaucoup d'autres, jusqu'à Yseult, soleil incarné qui inonde de son amour l'hommelune Tristan, et cette étrange «Pucelle au Graal» qui tient entre ses mains un vase d'où émane une lumière surnaturelle...
