Insensés que nous sommes ! Nous nous
aimons. Quel songe avons-nous fait,
Camille ? Quelles vaines paroles, quelles misérables
folies ont passé comme un vent funeste entre nous
deux ? Lequel de nous a voulu tromper l'autre ? Hélas !
cette vie est elle-même un si pénible rêve ; pourquoi
encore y mêler les nôtres ? Ô mon Dieu, le bonheur
est une perle si rare dans cet océan d'ici-bas ! Tu nous
l'avais donné, pêcheur céleste, tu l'avais tiré pour nous
des profondeurs de l'abîme, cet inestimable joyau ; et
nous, comme des enfants gâtés que nous sommes, nous
en avons fait un jouet.
