This book has two important purposes. The first is to consider the challenges facing primary schools as they move towards a new century and a new millennium.
The second purpose of the book is to celebrate the work of primary schools and to note their unique qualities and achievements. Within these two broad purposes are four specific aims:
* to examine the changed and changing circumstances within which primary school education is now set
* to explore the unique organizational features of primary schools and their potential for dynamic development

Patrick Whitaker is an educational management consultant and writer, formerly a primary school teacher, headteacher, LEA adviser and Director of the Educational Management Development Unit in the University of Nottingham. He currently works with schools, colleges, businesses and LEAs throughout the United Kingdom and has written widely on management, leadership and learning in schools, including The Primary Head (Heinemann 1983), Managing Primary Schools in the 1990s (Paul Chapman 1990), Managing Change in Schools (Open University Press 1993), Practical Communication Skills in Schools (Longman 1993), and Managing to Learn (Cassell, 1995).
