Married in 1764, Abigail and John Adams worked side by side raising a family while John became one of the most respected lawyers in Massachusetts. When his duties as a statesman and diplomat during the Revolutionary War expanded, the Adamses endured lengthy separations. But throughout war, political upheaval and family tragedy, their loyalty and love remained strong. In Abigail and John, acclaimed scholar Edith Gelles presents the first dual biography of America''s original ''power couple.'' As much a romance as it is a lively chapter in early American history, this inspirational portrait tells the story of a uniquely compatible pair whose marriage served as a mirror for the changes taking place in the political world outside their home. Dr. Edith Gelles studied at Cornell and Yale, and received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. She is currently a senior scholar at Stanford''s Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Studies. She is the author of Portia: The World of Abigail Adams, a co-winner of the American Historical Association''s Herbert Feis Award, and Abigail Adams: A Writing Life, an examination of Abigail''s life through her letters. She lives in Palo Alto, California. ''This eminently readable joint biography, full of insightful detail, is charming and sensitive, yet candid and unflinching.'' - Daniel Walker Howe, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848
