In February, 1966, the United States was embroiled in the Vietnam War, and Dieter Dengler was one of the first pilots in the conflict to be shot down over enemy territory. The Naval lieutenant crashed in the heart of communist-controlled territory, and after being hunted in the jungle for several days, was captured. But defying the odds, Dengler became the only pilot to escape from extended captivity in the North Vietnamese jungle. Bruce Henderson met Dengler on the aircraft carrier Ranger during Vietnam, and became friends with him after Dengler''s almost miraculous escape. The two men planned to write a book together but Dengler died in 2001, leaving Henderson to recount the story of this remarkable and extremely resourceful individual. Hero Found is a tale of courage, bravery and grace under unbelievable pressure. Bruce Henderson is the author or co-author of more than twenty nonfiction books, including the #1 New York Times best-seller And the Sea Will Tell (with Vincent Bugliosi) and Down to the Sea: An Epic Story of Naval Disaster and Heroism in World War II. During the Vietnam War, Henderson served as a U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet weatherman aboard the aircraft carrier Ranger (1965-67). A former newspaper and magazine writer, he now teaches nonfiction writing at Stanford. ''Dengler''s actual POW experiences are the centerpiece of the book, and, thanks to Henderson''s storytelling skill, these scenes often read like a first-rate suspense novel ... poignant in its details. An engaging tale of a harrowing POW experience.'' - Kirkus Reviews
