This book covers various clinical aspects of radiation oncology, its principles and its current practice in the management of cancer types and sites in the human body. The book is in 2 volumes - Volume I covers basic and technical aspects, while Volume II provides the clinical basis of modern radiation oncology. The chapters in this volume concentrate on decision making in radiation oncology; integration of multidisciplinary approaches; clinical radiotherapy workflow covering the aim, simulation and imaging guidelines, current techniques and dose prescriptions; toxicities related to radiotherapy; and the outcomes and survival for various human cancers. It emphasizes on Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), where more than two-thirds of cancer patients would receive radiotherapy. It includes separate chapters on contemporary topics like radiotherapy for benign diseases, geriatric population, and emergencies; biological and genetic based radiation oncology; and resource appropriate cancer management.
The book is a relevant resource for busy radiation oncology physicians, and trainees/residents/fellows seeking to utilize evidence in the literature to guide the radiation therapy practices and multi-disciplinary care for cancer patients. Über den Autor / die Autorin

Dr. Bidhu K. Mohanti, (M.D.), completed his residency in radiotherapy at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India; worked as faculty at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, and as Professor at AIIMS, New Delhi in academic, clinical, and research areas. Currently, Dr. Mohanti is working as a Director-Academic and Head of Radiation Oncology, Bagchi Sri Shankara Cancer Centre & Research Institute, Bhubaneswar, India. His clinical and basic research works are in head and neck and gastro-intestinal cancers, and in palliative care. His areas of interest include the development of cancer facilities in government and private organizations. Dr. Mohanti has also been a part of the government assignment to set up the National Oncology Center at Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman; and an expert under the IAEA, Vienna, and European Commission, Brussels, Europe. His published works cover many areas such as 200 papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals, several chapters in various books, as editor of two biomedical books, and author of a memoir.
Dr. SVS Deo (MS, FACS, FRCS) completed his residency in surgery and surgical oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi, India. Worked as Professor and Head of Department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi and at National Cancer Institute, Jhajjar from 1995 to 2024. Currently Dr. Deo is the Oncology Lead and Senior Consultant in Surgical Oncology at Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He has played a significant role in establishing the specialty of surgical oncology and MCh program at AIIMS, New Delhi and NCI Jhajjar. He has 34 years’ experience in the field of academics, research and patient care. Trained and mentored more than 200 cancer surgeons. Served as advisor to Govt. of India for cancer control program, cancer registry and surgical oncology training programs. Published 250 articles in prestigious journals and edited two books. Served as President of Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO), Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) and Oncology Forum, Delhi. He is member of International Advisory board of ASCO & SSO, USA.
Dr. JP Agarwal (M.D.) completed his post-graduation from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, India. Since then, he joined his alma mater as faculty in 1996 and became Professor in 2006 and subsequently as Head of his department in november 2016. Most of his work, clinical research, and scientific publications relate to head neck cancers and lung cancers in national and international journals. He is an active member of several professional societies, national committees for the development of radiation oncology facilities and access to cancer care. He has been awarded several fellowships including an honorary membership of ESTRO. He is on editorial boards on several peer reviewed international and national scientific journals. He has been a very keen publisher of his research work, has authored and co-authored more than 400 peer reviewed articles and has over six thousand citations with the h-index of 37 since 2020.
Dr. Sarbani Ghosh Laskar (MD, DNB), completed her training and residency at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, India. Since then, she has worked as a Senior Research Fellow for the CSIR and from 20001 working as faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. She is a recognised teacher for MD in radiation oncology. She serves as a faculty in the Head and Neck disease management group of the Institute and has a keen interest in training, quality improvement and diverse aspects of Oncology and Radiation Oncology. She has been an expert in the multidisciplinary care of patients with head and neck cancer, with special interests in multimodality management, adjuvant therapy, surface brachytherapy, nasopharyngeal cancer and reirradiation, to name a few areas. She has also served on Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and the Data Monitoring and Safety subunit of the IRB. She plays an active role in collaborative, multi-institutional studies, nationally and internationally. Her work has involved close collaboration with international bodies like the IAEA, ESTRO, HNCIG, etc. She has more than 85 publications in peer reviewed journals and has authored and co-authored several textbook chapters.
Dr. Ahitagni Biswas (MD, DNB, FRCR) completed his junior residency toward M.D. in Radiation Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India in 2009 and subsequently did his senior residency at PGIMER Chandigarh (2009-10) and AIIMS, New Delhi (2010-12). Thereafter he worked as a senior research associate (SRA) in neuro-oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi (2012-14) and since then as faculty in Radiation Oncology at the same institute. He cleared FRCR Clinical Oncology and MRCP Medical Oncology exams of UK in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Biswas is currently a Professor in Radiation Oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi. He was awarded the ICMR-DHR international clinical fellowship (2024-25) at the Christie NHS Proton Beam Therapy Centre, Manchester, UK. He has 91 publications & 110 conference abstracts to his credit, which have garnered more than 1050 citations. His areas of interest include neuro-oncology, head & neck oncology, paediatric and haematolymphoid radiation oncology.
 Dr. Kumar Prabhash (M.D., D.M.) is Professor, Department of Medical Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, India. He has more than 25 years of experience in oncology. He has worked in prestigious institutes in India. He has worked at Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi; Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore; and Tata Memorial Hospital. He has more than 400 PubMed indexed papers to his credit.
Dr. Sanjoy Chatterjee (FRCP, FRCR, FHEA) graduated from Medical College, Kolkata, India with university accolades. Thereafter he completed his residency in general medicine and was conferred the MRCP(UK) in general medicine. His super-specialty training in UK was in clinical oncology, across centres in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow and further completed his FRCR (clinical oncology). He has thereafter done fellowships in prestigious institutions including the Christie Hospital, Manchester and Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He completed his postgraduate certificate in Medical Education from University of Dundee and was awarded the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy of UK (FHEA).  He had been practising as a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in breast and head and neck cancers. Dr. Chatterjee has played an active role in setting up the services for academics and research protocols for Tata Medical Center, Kolkata. Apart from hundreds of publications in peer reviewed indexed journals, his research endeavours include leading potentially practice changing multi-centre randomised controlled trials in breast and head and neck cancers.
Dr. Anusheel Munshi (M.D., D.N.B.) is Director of Radiation Oncology at the IOCI, Fortis Noida, India with more than 25 years of experience in cancer care. He has worked at premier institutes across the country including at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai; All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India. He has played key roles in setting up new radiation oncology facilities at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon and Manipal Hospitals, Delhi. Dr. Munshi has published more than 150 many papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals and many of these are extensively cited. In addition, he has authored several chapters in various books and has conducted clinical research including investigator-initiated trials in breast, brain, and lung cancers. He is reviewer for multiple international journals and member of several prestigious oncology societies.
