This volume comprises the select peer-reviewed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Product Lifecycle Modeling, Simulation, and Synthesis (PMLSS 2021), jointly organized by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST)  in collaboration with PLMSS Trust, Bangalore, India.  It aims to provide a broad spectrum picture of the state-of-the-art research and development in the areas of additive manufacturing, aerodynamics, mission design, modeling & simulations, AI/ML/Industry 4.0/CAD/CAM/CAE, space system design, materials, and manufacturing process development and simulations, PLM - aerospace & aircraft applications. PLMSS-2021 served as a platform to exchange ideas and information about the latest PLM practices to achieve product excellence and improve yield. The intention of the conference was to unify R & D institutes, academia and industry to discuss over novel methods, challenges and possibilities in PLM in the space system perspective. This volume will provide a valuable resource for those in academia and industry.

Dr. P. Ramesh Narayanan retired as Group Director,  Materials  and Metallurgy  Group, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram. He has also served as General Manager, Materials Management Activities of VSSC, ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram. His contributions include Technical, Techno-managerial and Administrative activities related to realizing and delivering all types of Metallic materials like Steels, Aluminium alloys, Titanium alloys, Super alloys, Special Purpose alloys and Fasteners in various forms to meet the requirements of Launch Vehicle and Satellite programmes of ISRO. Sri. Ramesh Narayanan's research areas include Materials Characterization, Testing and Failure Analysis of materials, Optical and Electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction and Residual Stress Analysis in materials and components, Texture and Microstructure in materials. After completing his Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the PSG College of Technology, India (1984) and Master's in Process Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, (1987), he joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram in 1987. He completed his Doctoral Degree in Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore in 2010. He has been the recipient of the following Awards : ISRO Team Excellence Award for “ Aluminium Alloy Indigenization Programme “ in 2008,  ISRO Team Excellence Award for “ Alpha Ti alloy gas bottle development”  in 2015 and  Brahm Prakash Best PhD Thesis Award from IIM Trivandrum Chapter. He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Institute of Metals. He was a member of the Board of Studies of the Aerospace Engineering Department at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amrita Nagar, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He has been the author/co-author of 120 Technical papers in Peer reviewed International Journals. He has also delivered more than 30 Invited talks and Keynote Addresses in National and International Conferences. He has contributed to the following Chapters:“ Metallography of Aluminum Alloys: Atlas of Microstructures “ , Encyclopedia of Aluminum and Its Alloys, CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, 2019 and “ Cryogenic Toughness and Fractography of Aluminium Alloys, ASM Handbook, Vol. 12, Fractography, 2021. He has been involved in the organization of many National and International Conferences.
 
Dr. S Ravishankar is the Chief Scientist and Technical Domain Expert-Manufacturing Technologies at CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore. With over 36 years of experience, his areas of expertise include CAD/CAM, Aircraft Manufacturing and Manufacturing Process definition, Computational & Large Volume Metrology, Precision Engineering, Aircraft Tool Design, Digital Prototype Assembly, Additive and Hybrid Manufacturing, Registration and Inspection of aircraft parts and assemblies. He has to his credit publications in International referred journals and has given invited talks in many National and International conferences. He is the recipient of CSIR-NAL Young Scientist Award in the year 2000, for “Significant contributions in the area of CAD/CAM”. He has obtained his Master’s Degree from BITS, Pilani and PhD from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
 
Dr. S.V.S. Narayana Murty has received his B.E. from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, M.E. from IISc-Bangalore and Ph.D. from IIT-Bombay, all in Metallurgical Engineering. Presently, he is the Chairman & Managing Director of Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited, Hyderabad. He joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum in 1993 and worked extensively on the development of ultrahigh strength steels, titanium alloys, superalloys and aluminium alloys. He was a post doctoral fellow at the Steel Research Centre, National Institute for Materials Science, Japan (2003-2006) and worked on the development of ultrafine grained steels. During 2021-2025, he was with Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (ISRO), Trivandrum. At LPSC he was responsible for the indigenization and supply of materials for earth storable, cryogenic, semi-cryogenic stages as well as for satellite propulsion systems for Indian space program. His areas of expertise include aerospace materials development and processing, material testing, characterization, failure analysis of aerospace components and additive manufacturing. 
Dr. Narayana Murty is a recipient of Young Metallurgist Award (2001) and Metallurgist of the Year award (2018), both from Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He was a member of ISRO Team excellence award for “Indigenization of Copper alloy Cu-Cr-Ti-Zr thrust chamber of cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines” (2012). For his post-doctoral work at NIMS, he has received AIDA Technology Innovation award by Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity (2009) for Development of Ultrafine Grained Steels. He was awarded the National Failure Analyst award (2021) by the Society for Failure Analysis and G.D. Birla Gold Medal (2022) by the Indian Institute of Metals. Dr. Murty is an elected fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences, (2017) and Indian National Academy of Engineering (2021). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, published by Springer. He is on the editorial boards of Encyclopedia of Aluminium alloys, ASTM Journal of Materials Performance and Characterization and Journal of Engineering Failure Analysis. He is also a member of the American Society for Metals (ASM) Handbook committee. He is a member of research council of CSIR-AMPRI, Bhopal, Board Member of Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad, Board Member of Indian Iron & Steel Sector Skill Council, Kolkata, and technical advisory group of ARCI, Hyderabad. He is in the list of top 2% scientists published by Stanford University. He has supervised 8 Ph.D. students and more than 25 masters students. He is author of several ISRO internal technical reports and over 325 publications in international peer reviewed journals.
