This substantive yet easy-to-use book provides a guide to eight historic Italian basilicas and cathedrals, with the background and profiles of each. Their locations range from central to northern Italy, and they offer a complex mix of architectural and decorative styles. The comprehensive approach begins with the secular Roman basilica model which would become the basis of all Christian churches from their beginnings until now. From there, the book profiles how church styles evolved from the plain architecture of these early churches into the more complex Romanesque style in the 11th century, with a detour to show the stunning early Christian churches built by the Byzantines.
Part One provides an overview of the sequence of the evolving architectural history of churches in the Middle Ages. Part Two consists of profiles of the eight churches.
