Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro, 70-19 BC) was born in the north of Italy and completed his education in Rome. Generally considered Rome's greatest poet, he wrote Eclogues, 37 BC, and Georgics, 29 BC. He then devoted the rest of his life to the composition of his greatest work, the epic poem the Aeneid.

Deryck Williams was Professor of Latin in the University of Reading, UK, and the foremost Virgilian scholar of his generation.His editions of Aeneid III and V and Aeneid 1-VI, VII-XII are the most widely used by students of Virgil.He also wrote the first of the New Surveys in the Classics (1967).R.D. Williams was Professor of Latin at the University of Reading, UK. His commentaries on Virgil include Aeneas and the Roman Hero, editions of the Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid III and V, all published by Bloomsbury.
