Questions d'énonciation dans les textes rhétoriques et philosophiques de l'Antiquité

Issu de deux colloques qui se sont tenus successivement à Sorbonne Université (juin 2017) et l'Université de Clermont-Auvergne (octobre 2018), le présent volume rassemble vingt-trois articles consacrés à l'étude de l'énonciation dans les textes rhétoriques et philosophiques de l'Antiquité. Il propose une lecture des textes anciens informée par la conception bakhtinienne du langage. Contre la représentation de la parole comme actualisation isolée d'un système linguistique unique et abstrait, Bakhtine postule, d'une part, une pluralité de systèmes linguistiques concrets, de « langues », auxquelles le locuteur a affaire quand il parle, d'autre part, la primauté de l'interaction par rapport à l'énoncé. En somme, toute parole réagit à des prises de paroles antérieures et anticipe la réaction du destinataire au sein d'une situation d'énonciation donnée - ou construite par l'auteur. Pour le lecteur des textes anciens, qui a appris à les comprendre dans les grammaires et les lexiques, la tentation est grande de ne les voir que comme l'émanation d'un système linguistique figé : le présent volume propose au contraire de les voir comme une parole vivante, née au sein d'une interaction et prenant sens par rapport à elle. Les études rassemblées abordent la question de l'énonciation sous deux aspects :

• les unes analysent la représentation de différentes situations d'énonciation par les auteurs anciens et montrent son importance pour l'interprétation ;


• les autres s'intéressent à sa théorisation antique. Si les termes linguistiques d'énonciation et d'interaction n'ont pas d'équivalents stricts chez les Anciens, les auteurs de traités ont cherché à définir les effets - et parfois les dangers - suscités par la présence de plusieurs voix au sein d'un texte écrit.

Le volume est organisé en trois parties, selon un double critère générique et chronologique : la première est consacrée à la pratique et à la théorie rhétorique ; la seconde porte sur le dialogue platonicien ; la troisième est centrée sur l'époque impériale, où le dialogue entre philosophie et rhétorique est si intense que la frontière générique s'estompe.

This volume gathers together twenty-three papers devoted to the question of enunciation in ancient rhetoric and philosophy, which were presented at two conferences (Sorbonne Université, June 2017 and Université de Clermont-Auvergne, October 2018). It offers a reading of ancient texts informed by the Bakhtinian conception of language. Against the representation of speech as an isolated actualisation of a single and abstract linguistic System, Bakhtin postulates, on the one hand, a plurality of concrete linguistic Systems - of « idioms » - with which the subject has to deal when he speaks, and on the other hand, the primacy of interaction over utterance. Thus, every speech act responds to previous speech acts and anticipates the reaction of the interlocutor within a given - or constructed - situation. The reader of ancient texts, who can understand them only with the help of grammar books and lexica, is very likely to consider them as the emanation of a fixed linguistic System : this volume offers on the contrary to see them as a lively discourse, born within an interaction and taking its meaning from it. The collected studies address the issue of enunciation in two ways:

• Some analyse the representation of different enunciative situations by ancient authors and show its importance for the interpretation ;


• Others take an interest in the ancient theorisation of enunciation. Of course, « enunciation » and « interaction » as linguistic terms have no strict equivalent in ancient literature, yet the authors of treatises tried to define the effects - and sometimes the risks - resulting from the presence of multiple voices within a written text.

This volume is divided in three parts, according to a twofold generic and chronological criterion : the first part is devoted to the rhetoric and its ancient theorisation ; the second concerns the platonic dialogue ; the third focuses on the imperial era, when the dialogue between philosophy and rhetoric is so intense that the generic border vanishes.
